From managed cloud to two self-hosted nodes

Where it started

A Laravel application with three environments and around a hundred recurring users. The monthly bill was $500: the structure of an established platform, carried by an audience that did not yet justify it. The spend came not from a traffic peak but from managed services sized for a scale the application did not have.

The decision

Leave managed cloud and hold the redundancy with two independent nodes rather than one zone of managed services. The database moved to live replication between the two, with a load balancer in front splitting traffic and taking a failed node out of rotation. A return to the cloud is planned for when the audience justifies it: the decision is reversible by design.

What came of it

$120 a month, and more database redundancy than before — where there was one managed instance there are now two nodes replicating to each other. The team keeps the ability to move back without rebuilding the application.
